Bilateral relations between Switzerland and Uruguay

The bilateral relations between the two countries look back on a long history due to the fact that Uruguay was an emigration destination for many German-speaking Swiss as early as the 19th century. In the cities of Montevideo, Paysandú and Minas , Swiss people cultivated customs by founding clubs, shooting societies and choirs. In the years 1862/1863, farmers of Swiss origin were also largely responsible for founding the Uruguayan city of Nueva Helvecia .

In 1859, Switzerland appointed a consul in Uruguay for the first time. A first diplomatic mission was finally opened in Montevideo after the Second World War in 1947. A Swiss Chamber of Commerce was established in Uruguay three years earlier in 1944.
