Fernando Juan Santiago Francisco María Piria de Grossi (born August 21, 1847 in Montevideo , Uruguay ; † December 11, 1933 there ) was a Uruguayan entrepreneur , journalist , politician and founder of the seaside resort named after him Piriápolis in Uruguay.

He was born in 1847 as the son of the Italian immigrants Lorenzo Piria and Serafina de Grossi from Genoa . The house where he was born was in Ciudad Vieja in the section of Calle Treinta y Tres between Calle Cerrito and Calle Piedras . His grandfather José Piria had already traveled several times to the Río de la Plata as commander of the frigate Concepción from 1810 onwards, and following the example of his own father, his father later made several trips to Montevideo with the Francisco José before he finally settled there.

He spent his school days in Italy. After returning to Uruguay, he initially joined the army at the age of 16. He later worked in various fields, including working as an auctioneer. On December 25, 1866, he married Magdalena Rodino, who became the mother of his four children, Franz Joseph , Adela , Lawrence and Arthur .

Creation of Piriápolis

In 1892 he bought 2,700 hectares (7,700 cuadras) of land between Cerro Pan de Azúcar and the sea, which he planted with trees, olive groves, pines and tobacco, among other things, which earned him a bonus from the Ministry of Livestock and Agriculture. He used this to build a public school on site that still exists today. Six years later, however, his plantations were destroyed by locusts.

In the same year he took a trip to Europe, from which his inspiration for the tourist use of the Uruguayan coast came. In 1897 his castle, the Castillo de Piria, was built in this area. In 1905 he built the first Grand Hotel, called the Hotel Piriápolis, there. Five years later, a promenade modeled on the French Riviera was built on the coast. In 1912 he finally started auctioning the first plots in Piriápolis, after which the town began to grow with the construction of numerous houses.
