Etymology and history
The name of Palermo is derived from the Italian city of the same name , which in turn results from the fact that a large number of immigrants settled there, who came to the city until the first decades of the 20th century. Palermo serves poorer sections of the population for residential purposes. For a long time, the so-called montevideotypical Conventillos and Inquilinatos were a common form of living here . Together with the Barrio Sur , Palermo forms the center of the carnival activities of the descendants of immigrants of East African origin and is considered the cradle of the Candombe .
Infrastructure and sights
In the district there is the seat of the Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay (UTU) in the Calle San Salvador , as well as that of the Latin American integration association ALADI and the embassy of the United States.
