Rambla is the name of the embankment of the Uruguayan capital Montevideo .

It runs along the city's coastline and separates it from the Río de la Plata and the numerous beaches there. These beaches include, for example, Playa Ramírez , the crescent-shaped Playa Pocitos , Playa Buceo , Playa Malvín , Playa Honda or Playa Carrasco . On this route it has different names on the different sections of the coast. These are as follows from west to east:

  • Rambla Dr. Baltasar Brum
  • Rambla Edison
  • Rambla Sud America
  • Rambla FDRoosevelt
  • Rambla 25 de Agosto de 1825 with Edificio Yacaré
  • Rambla Francia
  • Rambla Gran Bretaña
  • Rambla Sur
  • Rambla República Argentina
  • Rambla Presidente Wilson
  • Rambla Mahatma Gandhi
  • Rambla República del Peru
  • Rambla Armenia
  • Rambla República de Chile
  • Rambla O'Higgins
  • Rambla República de Mexico
  • Rambla Tomas Berreta

The section called Rambla Sur , fortified by pink granite walls, was inaugurated on December 30, 1935. Since its construction was largely driven by José Luis Batlle, this section was henceforth popularly called El balcón de Pepe (in German: Pepes balcony ). The Rambla serves both road traffic and pedestrians. It is also part of the city's social life and a tourist attraction. At the beginning of 2010 it was proposed that the Rambla be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
