The United Nations flag has been the official symbol of the United Nations UN since October 20, 1947 . Today it is often seen as a symbol of the entire earth or humanity .
presentation
The flag shows the globe on a sky-blue flag cloth in white framed by two olive branches . The map shows the entire human-inhabited land mass - excluding Antarctica . In the center lies the geographic North Pole and around it the continents of the northern hemisphere ; the southern hemisphere is distorted by the projection, which is similar to an equidistant azimuthal projection , and represented too large in terms of area.
The olive branches are a classic peace sign . The flag thus shows the fundamental concern of the United Nations: the whole world united in peace .
history
The flag of the United Nations was adopted on October 20, 1947 by resolution 167 (II) of the United Nations General Assembly . It is very similar to a first version from April 1945. The only difference is that the original version of the American double continent is facing down; In 1947 the prime meridian and thus Europe and Africa were turned downwards.
The resolution empowered the United Nations Secretary-General to make basic provisions on the use of the flag. He complied with this on December 19, 1947 by issuing the Flag Code . He later issued more detailed regulations with the Flag Regulations . According to Article 7 of the Flag Code , any commercial use of the flag is prohibited.
While United Nations vehicles are white, helmets and berets are in the light blue of the flag. Hence the term blue helmets .
With the "Convention on the Safety of Personnel of the United Nations and Associated Personnel" of December 9, 1994, the flag and symbol of the United Nations were declared a protective symbol , which guarantees civilian employees and blue helmet soldiers of UN peacekeeping forces and their institutions protection in the event of armed conflict. In this context, their use is restricted by law. Until then, some vehicles had the Red Cross instead of the “UN” logo .
