Lucien Laurent (born December 10, 1907 in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés , † April 11, 2005 in Besançon ) was a French football player and coach .
Career
The trained car mechanic Laurent went down in football history when he became the first goalscorer of the first football World Cup in Uruguay on July 13, 1930 . In the 19th minute of the game he scored the 1-0 for France in the game against Mexico after an assist by Marcel Langiller in Montevideo . The game ended 4-1 for France. Laurent was not aware of the historical significance of his only World Cup goal and later said:
“Of course we were all happy about this goal, but […] nobody had realized that I had made history. A quick handshake, that's it, and off we went. "
Laurent made ten appearances for France and scored two goals. He was also in the French squad at the 1934 World Cup in Italy , but was not used. In the French professional league , Lucien Laurent, who grew up at CA Paris with his brother Jean and Marcel Langiller, played for FC Sochaux-Montbeliard .
Lucien Laurent died in Besançon hospital at the age of 97.
