Darío Rodríguez , full name Octavio Darío Rodríguez Peña , (born September 17, 1974 in Montevideo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

Dario Rodriguez played in youth for the Uruguayan clubs Huracan Villegas and Higos del Mar . In 1990 he moved to the youth department of Sud América . From 1992 he played in the professional team of Sud América. In 1995 he moved to Deportivo Toluca in Mexico . In 1996 he returned to Uruguay and played for Club Atlético Bella Vista until 1998 . Then he played for the multiple national champion Peñarol Montevideo . Following the 2002 World Cup , Rodríguez moved to FC Schalke 04 , where he had a contract until 2008. His contract was terminated on January 4, 2008 due to a bereavement in the family at the player's request. On January 26th, 2008, the crowd's darling was adopted in a test match against FC Basel . He went back to Uruguay and joined his old club Peñarol.

At FC Schalke 04, the player with a strong header was first used as a left defender and left midfield, then mainly in central defense. He scored six goals in 102 Bundesliga games. He also scored a goal in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup game for Belarusian club FK Homel .

Since the Clausura 2008 he has been under contract with Peñarol again. There he won the Uruguayan national championship in the 2009/10 and 2012/13 seasons. By the end of the 2012/13 season, he had since played a total of 126 games in the Primera División , scoring eight goals. In addition, the statistics for this career segment show 25 matches (one goal) in the Copa Libertadores , four Copa Sudamericana games and two appearances in the Liguilla. In the 2013/14 season he only made twelve league appearances (two goals) and played four games of the Copa Libertadores 2014 (no goal) - also due to a two-month doping ban that lasted until September 5, 2013 due to the use of corticoids . In the current 2014/15 season, he was used in nine first division games (no goal) and three games (no goal) of the Copa Sudamericana 2014 until the end of the Apertura 2014 . After 22 years as a professional, Rodríguez ended his career in January 2015. Just a few days after this decision, a possible comeback in the ranks of the Montevideo Wanderers for the upcoming games of the Copa Libertadores 2015 was reported. At that time, his brother Samanta Rodríguez took on the role of assistant coach for the Montevideans, who is said to have been the initiator of this possible commitment. Jorge Nin, a member of the club's management, ruled out such an obligation, as it does not correspond to the traditional philosophy of the club to bet on young players.

National team

From his debut on February 17, 2000 to his last appearance on July 10, 2007, he made 51 appearances for Uruguay (four goals). With the Celeste he finished third at the 2004 Copa America . In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , the national team from Rodríguez failed to Australia . In the first leg in Montevideo, he scored the 1-0 winning goal for his colors. In the second leg it was 1-0 for Australia after 120 minutes, so a penalty shoot-out had to bring the decision. Rodríguez missed his penalty and was one of the unlucky Uruguayans. Rodríguez was also a member of Uruguay's squad at the 2007 Copa America .
