Manuel Varela (* 1891 or 1892 ; † 1927 ) was a Uruguayan football player .

Varela took part with the national team in the South American Championships in 1916 (three games), 1917 (three games) and 1919 (four games, one own goal). Uruguay won the title in 1916 and 1917 respectively. In 1919 his home country narrowly failed and finished second.

At the 1917 tournament it came to the peculiarity that Varela replaced the injured goalkeeper Cayetano Saporiti in his position in the last and decisive game against the Argentine selection when the score was 1-0 for Uruguay from the 70th minute of the game . He survived the rest of the season without conceding a goal.

He also won the 1917 Copa Newton with the national team .

Varela died in 1927 at the age of only 35 in Vilardebó Hospital .
