Carmelo Cedrún Ochandategui (born December 6, 1930 in Amorebieta-Etxano ) is a former Spanish football goalkeeper.

Club career

In his youth, Carmelo played for the clubs SD Amorebieta and Athletic Bilbao . In 1950 he was accepted into the professional squad by Athletic Bilbao. Carmelo stayed with the Basques for 14 years until 1964. With the team with the likes of Zarra , Agustín Gaínza and Jesús Garay , Carmelo won the Spanish title in 1955/56 and the Copa del Rey in 1954/55 , 1955/56 and 1957/58 . In his debut on April 15, 1951 at the home game against Sevilla FC , he did not allow for a goal in the 3-0. In the 1955/56 championship season , he had to concede only 31 goals in 30 games, a fantastic figure at the time. In 1964 he moved to Espanyol Barcelona after losing his place on the starting line-up to José Ángel Iribar . In his three years in Barcelona he played 82 games, which means he was number 1 immediately after arriving. In 1967 he went to the United States to Baltimore Bays , where he ended his career in 1968.

National team career

Carmelo played 13 times for Spain between 1954 and 1963 . With the selection of his home country , he took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile , but did not get past the regular goalkeeper José Araquistáin . The Spanish team was eliminated in the preliminary round without Carmelo in goal. He ended his career in the national team in 1963, a year before Spain became European champions .

After the active career

After his playing days, Carmelo became a coach. For example, he coached Celta de Vigo or Real Murcia . However, he could not win a title as a coach.

His son, Andoni Cedrún , was also a footballer - goalkeeper, of course. Like his father, Andoni played for Bilbao but spent most of his career at Real Zaragoza .
