Torrance County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . In 2000 there were 16,383 people living here. The county seat is in Estancia .

Torrance County is almost centrally located in New Mexico and has an area of 8,666 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers (0.03 percent) are water. It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Santa Fe County , San Miguel County , Guadalupe County , Lincoln County , Socorro County , Valencia County, and Bernalillo County .

There is a national monument in the county , the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , Abo and Quarai ruins . Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had a population of 16,911. There were 6,024 households and 4,391 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.89% White, 1.66% African American, 2.09% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 17.95% other races Groups; 3.97% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 37.15% of the population.

Of the 6,024 households, 37.80% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 55.40% were married couples living together, 12.30% were single mothers. 27.10% were not families. 23.20% were single households and 7.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.20.

For the county as a whole, the population was 30.40% under 18, 7.50% between 18 and 24, 29.20% between 25 and 44, and 23.20% between 45 and 64 9.70% were 65 years of age or over.
