The Sandoval County is a county in the northern part of the state of New Mexico to the United States . It has 89,908 inhabitants (as of 2000). The county seat is in Bernalillo .

The county is located in central northwest New Mexico and has an area of 9,620; 13 square kilometers (0.13 percent) of this is water. Sights include Bandelier National Monument , Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument , Coronado State Park, and Fenton Lake State Park . In the County parts protrude the national forests Santa Fe National Forest and Cibola National Forest . The county borders the counties in New Mexico in a clockwise direction: Rio Arriba County , Los Alamos County , Santa Fe County , Bernalillo County , Cibola County , McKinley County, and San Juan County .

In addition to Bandelier National Monument, the county has three National Historic Landmark statuses , Big Bead Mesa , Jemez Historic Site, and Sandia Cave archaeological site . A total of 60 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

The county had 30,126 people as of the 2000 census . There were 11,134 households and 7,537 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.22% White, 0.78% African American, 1.82% Native American, 0.54% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 36.21% other races Groups; 4.33% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 77.96% of the population.

Of the 11,134 households, 34.60% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 44.50% were married couples living together, 16.40% were single mothers. 32.30% were not families. 26.60% are single households and 8.20% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.10 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.40% of residents under the age of 18, 10.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.90% between 45 and 64 years of age 11.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,524 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,250. Males had a median income of $ 27,307 versus $ 22,588 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,268. 24.40% of the population and 19.90% of families are below the poverty line. 27.80% of them were under 18 years and 25.90% were 65 years or older.
