Bernalillo is a city in Sandoval County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 6611 inhabitants ( as of 2000) . Bernalillo is also the county seat .
geography
The city is located on Historic Route 66 at the foot of the Sandia Mountains in the south of the county , in northwest New Mexico and has a total area of 12.2 km², of which 0.3 km² is water.
history
The area was settled by Spaniards as early as 1620 and mainly used for viticulture. The historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro runs through the city (at that time the area was part of New Spain ), which connected Mexico City and Santa Fe . In 1948 Bernalillo received town charter and became the seat of the county government. The place was named after a Bernal family who were among the first settlers in this area.
Events
The New Mexico Wine Festival is held each year on the first Saturday in September .
Demographics
According to the census in 2000 , 6,611 people in 2309 households and 1,724 families lived here. The population density was 555 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 60.17% White, 0.74% African American, 3.92% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 31.34% other groups, and 3.63% from two or more races .
Of the 2,309 households, 40.8% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 49.1% were married couples living together, 18.6% were single mothers and 25.3% were non-families, 20.2% consisted of single households and 6.9% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.30.
In relation to the entire town, the population consisted of 31.0% residents under 18 years of age, 9.9% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.4% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.2% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,864 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,286. Males had a median income of $ 27,417 versus $ 22,125 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,100. 13.9% of families and 18.2% of the population are below the poverty line.
