Belen is a town in Valencia County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 6901 inhabitants ( as of 2000 ) .

The city is almost centrally located in the county in the north-west of New Mexico and has a total area of 12.2 km² without any significant water surface.
history
The name Belen is derived from the Spanish word Belén for Bethlehem. The city was founded by the Spaniards through the settlement of Genízaros (Hispanic Indians ), who were supposed to protect the border area from raids by nomadic tribes.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 6901 people lived here in 2596 households and 1,778 families. The population density was 565 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 67.5% White, 1.1% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian and other groups.
Of the 2,596 households, 34.8% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 44.3% were married couples living together, 17.8% were a single mother, 31.5% were non-families, 26.2% were made up of single households and 10.6% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.14.
In relation to the entire town, the population was composed of 28.8% residents under 18 years of age, 9.6% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.5% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.0% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.1% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 90.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,754 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 30,765 US dollars. Males had a median income of $ 26,551 and females $ 21,300. The per capita income was $ 12,999. 23.2% of families and 24.8% of the population are below the poverty line.
