action

In the sleepy little town of Sommerton Junction in Arizona near the Mexican border, the aging sheriff Ray Owens pays close attention to laws and regulations. The widely respected and popular law enforcement officers mostly only deal with minor offenses such as parking the mayor in the wrong place and the eccentric gun collector Lewis Dinkum firing antique weapons. As it later turns out, he accepted this job after a disastrous assignment by the Los Angeles Police Department in which his colleague and several other officers were killed.

One night, the international drug lord Gabriel Cortez escapes from the hands of the FBI in Las Vegas and escapes in a converted Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 . He apparently takes the agent Ellen Richards hostage and sets course for the Mexican border. The sports car allows him to drive at speeds of over 200 miles per hour. In order to stop him, the FBI agent in charge John Bannister posts a roadblock on the way, which Cortez 'men break through using a truck with a ram before he drives through at full throttle himself. Meanwhile, a truck arrives in Sommerton that allegedly has loaded auto parts. He drives to the Parsons family farm. The farmer does not agree to the presence of the truck and the people accompanying him. Since he does not cooperate with the people who have traveled, he is murdered by them.

Around four in the morning, the alarmed Deputies Jerry Bailey and Sarah Torrance drive to the Parsons farm, whose daily milk delivery to the local diner has failed for the first time. The deputies find a vehicle lane at the end of which they meet Cortez's henchman Thomas Burrell and his team. These open fire and seriously wound Jerry Bailey. The deputies are saved at the last minute by Owens, who has since been informed by FBI agent Bannister that Cortez is on his way to the Mexican border and could possibly pass Sommerton.

Owens races back into town with his staff, but Bailey dies in Torrance's arms before he can be treated. A special squad that Bannister has sent to Sommerton, meanwhile, is involved in an accident by Cortez and so eliminated. Owens realizes that the people at Parsons' farm are preparing to cross the Cortez border with a mobile bridge over the gorge, which forms a natural barrier to Mexico here. Since he cannot hope for reinforcements, which Cortez eliminated en route, he appoints Bailey's imprisoned friend, Frank Martinez, and gun fanatic Dinkum as deputies to reinforce his team before Cortez's arrival. Together with the regulars Mike "Figgy" Figuerola and Sarah Torrance they prepare a counterattack.

Early in the morning they positioned themselves and a barricade in the city to stop the approaching Cortez. To ensure safe passage, Burrell comes into town and tries to clear the streets. In a long firefight, the sheriff and his team, including a Vickers machine gun , defeat the attackers and kill Burrell, but Cortez manages to break through with his car and continue his way to the bridge. It is now clear that his hostage Richards is in truth his accomplice, who helps him escape for three million dollars. In order to divert suspicion from her, he exposes her shortly after the city at full speed.

Sheriff Owens avails himself of the mayor's sports car and takes on the chase alone. In a field in front of the bridge, both collide with a combine harvester parked in the field and continue on foot. Owens reaches the bridge first and awaits Cortez for the final showdown. After a lengthy fight, Owens can finally prevail and bring Cortez back to town, where he hands him over to the FBI, which has since arrived. Richards is unmasked by Bannister as an accomplice of Cortez and also arrested.

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews. The film review portal Rotten Tomatoes gives 61% positive reviews for the film and it has a Metascore of 54 out of 100 on Metacritic .

“The action film, which is lost in exuberant firefights, relies entirely on the popularity of its main actor. The excessive glorification of the defensive and weapon-bristling US citizen seems very cynical. "

“The South Korean director Jee-woon was smart enough to give the fast-paced action film - its US debut - a good dose of humor. Some jokes are at Schwarzenegger's expense. Arnie takes it sporty. Conclusion: Arnie's paint is not quite off yet: a shiny, polished action cinema. "

"With 'The Last Stand', Kim Jee-woon succeeds in creating the perfect mixture of old school and modern: despite the poor US grossing results, a befitting comeback for action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is particularly worthwhile in the uncut original version."

The Last Stand has turned out to be a nice action film that sometimes offers a bit too much idle time, but always comes up with humor, slapstick and old-school action. Explosions, shootings, chases and brawls know how to please, so that in the end you can say that you haven't seen a movie, but that you have been entertained for almost two hours. "

“Because the film never takes itself seriously, even though it demands consternation from the audience at least twice, it is better not to question Cortez's plan and some other plot aspects. Armed with tolerance, you can enjoy the absurd touch of the whole thing and the extended final confrontation of good and bad, in which friends of pyromania, destruction and tough street cleaning get their money's worth. Not to forget a series of one-liners that completely take the genre fan back to the 1980s, when Schwarzenegger was actually still a 'running man'. "

Frames

The theatrical release of the film was January 31, 2013 in an FSK-16 version shortened by 22 seconds. Schwarzenegger's film was meant to be tailored to a younger audience. After adult cinema-goers talked about censorship, Splendid Film subsequently brought the uncut version to a few cinemas in a few cinemas on February 7th.

The DVD evaluation was planned for mid-May 2013. Both versions were also available for rental and sale. For television, the film has also been shortened significantly to now FSK 12, which allows it to be broadcast at 8:15 pm.
