Mora County is a county in the northwest of the state of New Mexico in the United States . The county has 4,881 people. The county seat is Mora .

The county covers an area of 5008 square kilometers; 6 square kilometers of it are water surfaces. At 3993 m, Truchas Peak is the county's highest mountain. The county borders the counties in New Mexico in a clockwise direction: Colfax County , Harding County , San Miguel County , Santa Fe County , Rio Arriba County, and Taos County .

There is a national monument in the county , the Fort Union National Monument . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status, the Watrous Historic District (La Junta) and the Wagon Mound . 25 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 5,180 people. There were 2,017 households and 1,397 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.88% White, 0.10% African American, 1.14% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 36.97% other races Groups; 2.80% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 81.64% of the population.
Of the 2,017 households, 31.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 50.50% were married couples living together, 11.90% were single mothers. 30.70% were not families. 26.90% were single households and 10.60% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.08.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.70% residents under 18 years of age, 7.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.40% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.00 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 100.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,518 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,648. Males had a median income of $ 24,483 versus $ 18,000 for females.
