Lea County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . It has 64,727 inhabitants. The county seat is Lovington .

The county covers an area of ​​11,380 square kilometers; 3 square kilometers (0.02 percent) of this is water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Roosevelt County , Cochran County, Texas, Andrews County (Texas), Gaines County (Texas), Yoakum County (Texas), Winkler County (Texas), Loving County (Texas), Eddy County and Chaves County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 55,511 people. There were 19,699 households and 14,715 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.13% White, 4.37% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 23.81% other races Groups; 3.27% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 39.65% of the population.
