The county is located in the northwest of the state and borders Arizona to the west. It has an area of ​​14,129 square kilometers; 17 square kilometers (0.12 percent) of this is water. In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: San Juan County , Sandoval County , Cibola County, and Apache County .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 74,798 people. There were 21,476 households and 16,686 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 16.39% White, 0.40% African American, 74.72% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 5.47% other races Groups; 2.52% were from two or more races.
