McKinley County is a county in the US state of New Mexico in the United States . 71,492 people live here. The county seat is Gallup .
geography
The county is located in the northwest of the state and borders Arizona to the west. It has an area of 14,129 square kilometers; 17 square kilometers (0.12 percent) of this is water. In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: San Juan County , Sandoval County , Cibola County, and Apache County .

According to the 2000 census , the county had 74,798 people. There were 21,476 households and 16,686 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 16.39% White, 0.40% African American, 74.72% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 5.47% other races Groups; 2.52% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 12.40% of the population.
Of the 21,476 households, 46.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 47.70% were married couples living together, 22.70% were single mothers. 22.30% were not families. 19.50% were single households and 5.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 3.44 and the average family size was 3.99 people.
For the entire county, the population was 38.00% below the age of 18, 9.70% between 18 and 24 years old, 27.80% between 25 and 44 years old, 17.60% between 45 and 64 years old 6.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 89.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,005 , and the median income for a family is $ 26,806. Males had a median income of $ 26,963 versus $ 21,014 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,872. 36.10% of the population and 31.90% of families are below the poverty line. 42.30% of them were under 18 years of age and 31.50% were 65 years of age or older.
