Quay County is a county in the northeast of the US state New Mexico . The county has 9,041 people. County seat is Tucumcari .

The county covers an area of ​​7,464 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers (0.24 percent) are water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Hartley County, Texas, Oldham County (Texas), Deaf Smith County, Texas, Curry County , Roosevelt County , De Baca County , Guadalupe County , San Miguel County , Harding County, and Union County .

The county had 10,155 people as of the 2000 census . There were 4,201 households and 2,844 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer.
