The Santa Fe County is a county in the state of New Mexico to the United States . It is located in the north of the state and has 144,170 inhabitants. The largest city is Santa Fe with 67,947 inhabitants.

The county has a land area of 4,944 square kilometers and a water area of 4 square kilometers. The county is slightly smaller than the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The highest mountain in Santa Fe County is the Santa Fe Baldy at 3,847 meters . In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by counties: Rio Arriba County , Mora County , San Miguel County , Torrance County , Bernalillo County , Sandoval County, and Los Alamos County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 129,292 people. There were 52,482 households and 32,801 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.52% White, 0.64% African American, 3.08% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 17.74% other races Groups; 4.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 49.04% of the population.
Of the 52,482 households, 30.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 45.50% were married couples living together, 11.70% were single mothers. 37.50% were not families. 29.40% were single households and 7.40% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.10% residents under 18 years of age, 8.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.80 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.40 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 42,207 , and the median income for a family was $ 50,000. Males had a median income of $ 33,287 versus $ 27,780 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,594. 12.00% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. 15.20% of them were under 18 years of age and 9.70% were 65 years of age or older.
