The place, which has been inhabited since the 14th century, is still known today for the all-black pottery made here . This previously developed skill became the main industry in the local economy during the Depression of the 1920s, which in the San Ildefonso Pueblo area was reinforced by internal conflicts and illegal logging , among other things . This was favored by the growing interest in Indian handicrafts.
The place has had a church since 1905, which was built on the remains of a mission church from the 17th century.
