Sierra County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . It is located in the southwest of the state and has 11,988 residents. The county seat is Truth or Consequences .

The county covers an area of 10,972 square kilometers; 145 square kilometers of this is water. The main bodies of water are the Rio Grande , Elephant Butte Lake, and Caballo Lake . Parts of the White Sands Missile Range , Gila National Forest and Cibola National Forest are also in the county. In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Socorro County , Lincoln County , Otero County , Doña Ana County , Luna County , Grant County, and Catron County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 13,270 people. There were 6,113 households and 3,618 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.97% White, 0.48% African American, 1.48% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, and 8.27% other races Groups; 2.54% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 26.28% of the population.
Of the 6,113 households, 20.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 47.50% were married couples living together, 8.60% were single mothers. 40.80% were not families. 35.90% were single households and 19.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.75 people.
For the entire county, the population was made up of 20.10% residents under 18 years of age, 5.40% between 18 and 24 years of age, 19.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 27.70% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 100.00 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.70 males.
The median income for a household in the 24,152 USD , and the median income for a family was 29,787 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,570 versus $ 19,839 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,023. 20.90% of the population and 13.80% of families are below the poverty line. 31.50% of these were under 18 years of age and 14.70% were 65 years of age or older.
