Truth or Consequences is a small town in New Mexico , United States . It is the county seat of the Sierra County with about 6500 inhabitants.
history
Originally the city was called Hot Springs . On March 31, 1950, the citizens of the city decided by 1,294 to 295 votes to rename it after the quiz show Truth or Consequences by Ralph Edwards . Edwards had promised to produce the city broadcast that would be the first to take the show's name. Today her name is mostly abbreviated to T or C by the people of New Mexico .
The city is a popular tourist destination and home of old people, which is also due to the low construction costs. Golf, hiking and fishing are the most popular leisure activities in and around the city. The well-known British photographer Nick Waplington documented the place, the people and their everyday life and the landscape around T or C in an illustrated book at the end of the 1990s .
Spaceport America , which opened in 2011, is located 48 km east of the city . It is the first privately financed spaceport. In the future, the first commercial space flights are to be carried out there by the company Virgin Galactic .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city covers 33.1 km². It is on the Rio Grande .
Demographics
The city has 7,289 inhabitants in 3,450 households and 1,859 families. The population density is 222.5 inhabitants per km². The housing density is 135.7 / km².
In the 3,450 households of which 20.2% have children under the age of 18, 40.5% are married couples and 46.1% are not married. The average household size is 2.04 and the average family size is 2.75. (All figures: according to the 2000 census )
