Unterems ( Walser German : Unneräms ) is a Parish of Dekanats Leuk and a Burgergemeinde with a Burgerrat the district Leuk . Until December 31, 2012, it was a political municipality in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . On January 1, 2013, it merged with the municipality of Turtmann to form the new municipality of Turtmann-Unterems . Unterems is elevated above the Rhone Valley .
geography
Unterems lies at 1003 m above sea level. M. The lowest point of the former community is above the power station in Turtmann at 800 m above sea level. M. and extends to the hamlet of Massoltern at 1200 m above sea level. The former municipality of Unterems covers an area of 139 ha. 64 ha of this is cultivated land, 36 ha are used as pastures and 37 ha as forest. 2 ha are considered unproductive area.
history
Unterems was first mentioned as a place in 1419. In that year Vilio Alamannd von Turtmann sold fruit tithes to his subjects . In the 14th century the village population was almost completely wiped out by the black death . In 1457 Unterems founded its own farmers' guild . In the middle of the 16th century, the same municipal statutes as Oberems were adopted . On June 4, 1799 the village was burned down to three houses by the French. A citizen register has been kept since 1824. Today none of the original Urburger families exist anymore. The oldest burger families still living in the community are Borter and Hischier. Balli was once the largest family of burgers in Unterems. Today Tscherrig is one of the most widely used names.

The paw or apostle cross symbolizes the proclamation of the Christian message. The linden tree expresses persistence and eternal bloom. These properties are passed on and carried on by the broken branch, indicated by the loop. The blue looks thoughtful.
Parish
The communities of Oberems and Unterems together form the parish of Ems. The separation from the large parish of Leuk took place in 1728 by Bishop Franz Joseph Supersaxo. The consecration took place in 1737 with the participation of Bishop Johann Joseph Arnold Blatter. The parish church was destroyed by flames when the French invaded in 1799 and rebuilt in 1803.
