Emil Paul Tscherrig (born February 3, 1947 in Unterems , Valais , Switzerland ) is a Roman Catholic Archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Emil Tscherrig, the eldest of eight children of a Swiss mountain farming family, entered the seminary in Sion and later Givisiez after graduating from the Brig college . He was ordained a priest on April 11, 1974 and received his doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University .

Pope John Paul II appointed him to the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1978, including as embassy secretary with stations in Uganda , South Korea , Mongolia and Bangladesh . Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on November 26, 1992 .

On May 4, 1996, John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Voli and Apostolic Nuncio in the African crisis area in Burundi . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on June 27 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Henri Cardinal Schwery and Norbert Brunner , Bishop of Sitten.

In 2000 he was appointed nuncio to Trinidad and Tobago , the Dominican Republic , Jamaica , Grenada , Guyana , St. Lucia , St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Bahamas ; from 2001 also in Barbados , Antigua and Barbuda , Suriname and St. Kitts and Nevis . In 2004 he took over the nunciatures in Korea and Mongolia .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Nuncio for the Nordic countries Sweden , Denmark , Finland , Iceland and Norway in 2008 , based near Stockholm . On January 5, 2012, Benedict XVI appointed him. to the Apostolic Nuncio in Argentina with seat in Buenos Aires .

On September 12, 2017, Pope Francis appointed Tscherrig to succeed Adriano Bernardini as nuncio in Italy and San Marino , based in Rome . He is the first non-Italian to hold the post of Ambassador of the Holy See to the Italian government and to San Marino.
