Oberems ( Valais German : Oberäms ) is a political municipality and a civic community in the Leuk district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .
history
When it separated from Leuk in 1238, Oberems became an independent municipality. The community was first hit by the plague around 1350. A good 100 years later, on January 18, 1457, the first regulations of the municipality of Ober-Ems were issued. A second plague period, which only 10 to 15% of the population survived, followed in the early 16th century. In 1727 the parish EMS was founded. When the French invaded Valais in 1799, the battle of Pfyn and the pillage of the village of Unterems broke out in May. In 1818, six people died on March 12th around 12:00 pm in an avalanche from the "Emshorn". A fire raged devastatingly in 1891, in which the hamlet of “Widenbrunnen” burned down completely. Numerous families and people have been left homeless. In 1908 a school house was built in Oberems. On January 17, 1918 the Raiffeisenkasse EMS was founded. Between 1922 and 1925 a power plant of Illsee Turtmann AG was built in the community, which was put into operation on February 26, 1925. A year later there was electric light in the community for the first time, the public water supply was set up between 1929 and 1934. In 1932 a mill and a saw were built in the village. New irrigation systems for agriculture were built in 1943. Between 1947 and 1958 there was a community baking house in "Widenbrunnen". There were major road construction measures with the construction of a forest road from Oberems to "Erzwäsch" in the Turtmanntal (12.5 km) in 1948 and the construction of the Oberems Dorf road to the hamlet of "Bielen" (1 km) in 1951. Two years later the new one Church in Oberems inaugurated. From 1951 the "LTUO" (Turtmann-Unterems-Oberems AG aerial cableway) exists.
Between 1959 and 1963 the first large avalanche barriers were built on the "Emshorn". The construction of a road from the hamlet "Tuminen" (Ergisch) to Unterems and Oberems (5.3 km) also took place during this time. From 1964 to 1968 a new water supply with a reservoir was built and the hydrant network in the hamlet was expanded. In 1977 the tourist association was founded, today the Oberems - Turtmanntal tourist office. From 1985 to 1996 the sewage system with a connection to the ARA Radet was established, in 1987 the civil defense system, the new consumption and the multi-purpose hall were put into operation. Between 1998 and 1999 the cabling of the electricity network in the village took place and in 2002 and 2003 the construction of the new workshop and the fire station. In 2003 and 2004 the oven and bakery in the village were restored.
On December 22, 2004, according to the judgment of the Federal Supreme Court (IP.525 / 2004 / ggs), the Turtmanntal was divided in half, according to the judgment of the Cantonal Court of the Canton of Valais on July 5, 2004. In 2006, a sports field with various uses was created and in October 2007 the redesign of the church square.
