Turtmann was first mentioned in 1210 as Terra de Thortemanei . The handling of goods in the Sust Turtmann, on the Simplon Route, reached its first high point in the 13th and 14th centuries. With the support of Kaspar Stockalper , trade across the Simplon was greatly intensified in the 16th and 17th centuries and the patrician houses of the merchants were built in the village. The oldest part of the Route du Simplon was built between 1810 and 1820 ; one side of the original 5 km long poplar avenue still exists.
