Varen ( Valais German : Faru; French: Varonne ) is a municipality and a civic community in the district of Leuk and a parish in the deanery Leuk of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The economy is dominated by viticulture .
The name Varen is made up of the Celtic terms ver (o) (above) and rona (edge, gorge) and describes the geographical location above the Dala gorge.
history
Archaeological digs show that Varens was already settled in the Bronze Age (8th century BC). The place is first mentioned in a document in 1241 in a sales deed of a vineyard. In 1543 the community statutes were put into writing.
On the occasion of the Battle of Pfynwald in 1799, many French invaders were thrown into the Dala Gorge . In revenge for this, the Church of the Seven Sorrows was burned down.
In 1990 the new connecting road Varen-Leuk was opened over the newly built Dalabrücke.

Church of the Seven Sorrows
The church, built at the same time as the parish was founded in 1783, was almost completely destroyed in the battle for Pfyn. It was rebuilt from 1800 to 1804 and expanded with two galleries in 1870. The two earthquakes in 1946 and 1960 caused such damage that the church had to be rebuilt as a result.
Today's church is built according to plans by architect Walter Feliser. The old tower was retained and is now surrounded by a polygonal room with six sides. The church windows were designed by Anton Mutter.
The wine village
In Varen, around 1 million liters of wine are produced annually on an area of 132 hectares. In addition to typical Valais grape varieties such as Rouge du Pays (= Cornalin du Valais, Walliser Cornalin), Chasselas , Johannisberg , the autochthonous Petite Arvine or Cornalin d'Aoste (= Humagne Rouge, Cornalin) and Humagne Blanc , specialties such as Gwäss (Gouais) and Splashers attached. The village has ten wineries that are run exclusively as family businesses.
The Pfyfoltru wine festival takes place every year at the end of September . The Pfyfoltru (Valais German for butterfly) is the symbol for the Valais wine village and also stands for a special Pinot Noir that is only produced under certain conditions in and around Varen.
