Salgesch ( fr. Salquenen ) is a civic community with a civic council and a political community of around 1450 inhabitants in the Leuk district and a parish of the Leuk dean's office in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .
geography
Salgesch is on the language border between Upper and Lower Valais. The natural language border forms the small brook Raspille north of the Rhone between Sierre and Salgesch. The place is best known for its vineyards , its wine and the proximity to the Pfynwald nature reserve , which is the largest contiguous pine forest in the Alps .
history
During preliminary explorations for the A9 motorway in the Pfynwald , traces of one of the oldest settlements in the region from around 4700 BC were discovered in the so-called Mörderstein (la Pierre du Meutrier), a prehistoric rock screen .
Salgesch developed from a farming village after the Second World War into today's modern wine village. Over 200 hectares of vineyards and over 40 wineries characterize today's village. The neighboring Pfynwald not only serves the Salgeschern and other surrounding communities as a recreational area , but is also one of the best preserved natural and cultural landscapes in Switzerland. The under nature conservation standing area offers different animal - and plant species , a variety of different and rare habitats for which it is nationally appreciated.
The municipal coat of arms consists of a white cross of St. John on a black background. In 1235 the Order of St. John settled in the village and built a hostel for pilgrims and travelers. In 1655 Kaspar Stockalper bought the Kommende and the hospice belonging to it on the Simplon Pass.
