The Pfynwald [ ˈpfiːnˌvalt ] ( French forêt de Finges or bois de Finges ) is one of the largest contiguous pine forests in the Alps and at the same time a nature reserve of national importance that extends between Leuk and Siders in the Swiss canton of Valais .

In the past, the area was feared as robbers rioted in the woods. So the traders and travelers preferred to take the route via Salgesch and Varen over the deep Dala Gorge to Leuk.

Today, environmental associations maintain this piece of nature. A nature trail leads to the most interesting places in the Pfynwald nature reserve and provides information about the flora and fauna and their protective measures. The new section of the A9 motorway is largely underground. The channel of the Rhone Werke AG , which was built right through the Pfynwald meets with fierce criticism from the local population, walkers and environmentalists, as the steep, smooth concrete walls make the water in the channel for humans and animals pose a risk.

The Pfynwald is the linguistic border between the francophone Lower Valais and the Upper Valais communicating in German .
