biography

Sports career

Plaschy made his first international appearance at the Junior World Championship in Maribor in 1992 , where he won the silver medal in slalom. Appearances in FIS and European Cup races followed. He contested his first race in the World Cup on December 20, 1994 in Lech . The following day he was able to win World Cup points for the first time as 28th of the slalom in Lech.

Plaschy achieved his breakthrough during the 1997/98 season : on January 6, 1998, he achieved sixth place in the giant slalom in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the best result of his career in this discipline. In the European Cup he was third in the overall standings with two slalom victories and three further podium places. In the slalom classification he had to admit defeat to the winner Benjamin Raich by one point.

In the 1998/99 World Cup season , Plaschy celebrated successes in Kitzbühel (2nd place), Wengen (5th place) and in the Sierra Nevada (4th place). He finished the season in 8th place in the slalom discipline. His most successful season was in the winter of 1999/2000 when he won the World Cup slaloms in Vail and Kranjska Gora . Two more top 10 placements were added, which ultimately resulted in 8th place in the slalom classification. Plaschy achieved all of his successes on skis from the Stöckli brand.

Plaschy was unable to confirm these successes. He was one of the last skiers to win World Cup races with long slalom skis (186 cm). In the following 2000/01 season, his competitors drove skis that were around 20 cm shorter. Plaschy missed the switch to the new carving technique, and he also had numerous failures. A 16th place on January 23, 2001 in Schladming was his only countable result. Almost a month later, on February 18, 2001, Plaschy contested his last World Cup race in Shigakogen . After the Swiss championships in Melchsee-Frutt in April 2001, he announced his resignation and continued his education in snow sports.

Plaschy took part in three world championships in slalom (1996, 1999, 2001), but was eliminated. At the 1998 Winter Olympics , he was twelfth in slalom. He was also three times Swiss champion (1999 giant slalom and slalom, 2000 slalom).

Resignation and attempt at comeback

In 2003, Plaschy began studying psychology , education and philosophy at the University of Bern . He broke off in 2005 before graduating with a bachelor's degree to attempt a comeback. In 2006 he won four FIS races , but was not allowed to compete in World Cup races, as a regulation introduced by WADA states that an athlete returning to top-level sport must first pass a one-year doping period in order to take part in international competitions. A cruciate ligament tear , which he suffered in December 2006 at an FIS giant slalom in Laax , put an end to his career for good. Plaschy then resumed his studies to become national coach Swiss Olympic.

After his time as an active player, Plaschy was initially employed as a ski coach at the National Training Center (NLZ) in Brig . He then switched to the Swiss-Ski European Cup team, for which he worked as a trainer for 3 years. After 3 years as a private trainer, he has been co-CEO of Ski-Valais since 2017. He is now involved in various ski races on Swiss television as a TV expert.
