San Miguel County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . 29,393 people live here. The county seat is in Las Vegas .

The county is located in northeastern New Mexico and has an area of 12,265 square kilometers, of which 48 square kilometers (0.39 percent) are water. In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Mora County , Harding County , Quay County , Guadalupe County , Torrance County, and Santa Fe Counties .

The county had 113,801 people as of the 2000 census . There were 37,711 households and 28,924 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 52.83% White, 0.44% African American, 36.88% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 6.77% other races Groups; 2.78% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 14.99% of the population.
Of the 37,711 households, 42.00% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 55.70% were married couples living together, 14.70% were single mothers. 23.30% were not families. 19.30% are single households and 6.40% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.43 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 32.60% of residents under the age of 18, 10.00% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.10% between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 98.30 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.70 males.
The median income for a household in the 33,762 USD , and the median income for a family was 37,382 USD. Males had a median income of $ 35,066 versus $ 21,299 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,282. 21.50% of the population and 18.00% of families are below the poverty line. 26.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 18.20% were 65 years of age or older.
