De Baca County is a county in the state of New Mexico in the United States . It has 2,022 inhabitants. The county seat is Fort Sumner .

De Baca County's main river is the Pecos River . The county covers an area of 6,045 square kilometers; 23 square kilometers (0.28 percent) of this is water. In New Mexico, the county is bordered clockwise by the counties: Guadalupe County , Quay County , Roosevelt County , Chaves County, and Lincoln County .
history
De Baca County was formed on February 28, 1917. The legendary Billy the Kid was killed in this county, in what was then the village of Fort Sumner.
Five buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018). They are all in Fort Sumner.

The county had a population of 45,323 people as of the 2000 census . There were 922 households and 614 families. The population density was less than 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.02% White, 0.04% African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 12.54% other races Groups; 2.23% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 35.27% of the population.
Of the 922 households, 27.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.60% were married couples living together, 7.30% were single mothers. 33.30% were not families. 30.80% are single households and 18.00% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.10% residents under 18 years of age, 5.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 25.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 96.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.10 males.
