The Taos County is a county in the north of the State of New Mexico to the United States . The county has 29,979 residents. The county seat is Taos .

The county is located in northern New Mexico, borders Colorado to the north and has an area of 5710 square kilometers; 4 square kilometers of it are water. The highest point of the county and the whole state is the Wheeler Peak with 4011 m . It is bordered clockwise by the counties: Costilla County, Colorado, Colfax County, New Mexico , Mora County , Rio Arriba County, and Conejos County, Colorado.

The county had a population of 29,979 as of the 2000 census . There were 12,675 households and 7,757 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 63.77% White, 0.35% African American, 6.59% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 24.84% other races Groups; 3.95% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 57.94% of the population.
Of the 12,675 households, 29.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 42.70% were married couples living together, 12.70% were single mothers. 38.80% were not families. 32.10% were single households and 8.90% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.50% residents under 18 years of age, 6.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.80% between 45 and 64 years of age 12.30% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 96.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.70 males.
