The Wheeler Peak , with an altitude of 4011 meters the highest mountain in the US state of New Mexico . It is named after George Montague Wheeler , an American officer and explorer of the late 19th century. Wheeler Peak was previously named Taos Peak after Taos Pueblo and the town of Taos .

The mountain is part of the Sangre de Cristo Range , the southernmost mountain range of the Rocky Mountains , and rises 20 kilometers northeast of the village of Taos and about 50 kilometers south of the border with neighboring Colorado . The nearby Mount Walter is only six meters lower and has a notch height of only 25 meters, which is why the two peaks are often confused with one another. The Wheeler Peak Wilderness Area was established to protect the wilderness .

There are several ways to get to the top. In addition to the normal hiking trails, there is also a more direct route to the destination, which, however, leads over a loose talus and requires more climbing. There is a summit book on the summit of Wheeler Peak .
