The Wheeler Peak , with an altitude of 3982 meters, the second highest summit in the US state of Nevada and the highest mountain whose solid extends entirely in the area of the state. The Utah border runs 20 kilometers east.

Highest mountain in Nevada

The highest point in the state is the summit of Boundary Peak (Nevada) on the California border . However, it is only a minor summit of Montgomery Peak , which is located in the California part of the White Mountains . Since Wheeler Peak is 25 meters lower than Boundary Peak, but with the Snake Range it is completely in Nevada, it can also be considered the highest mountain in Nevada. In addition, the notch height of the Wheeler Peak is 2305 meters, while it is only 77 meters at the Boundary Peak ("Grenzspitze"). With its considerable notch height, Wheeler Peak ranks twelfth among the mountains in the United States outside of Alaska and Hawaii . There is no higher peak within a radius of 320 kilometers.

Geology and surroundings

The summit area of Wheeler Peak is made of quartzite from the Cambrian . It came to the top through a fault in the Miocene . The 312 square kilometer Great Basin National Park extends over Wheeler Peak and serves, among other things, to protect the long-lived pines , the oldest known creatures (see for example Prometheus and Methuselah ). On the north-eastern slope of the mountain are the Lehman Caves , a stalactite cave that was founded as a national monument in 1922, i.e. before the establishment of the national park . Another attraction is Lexington Arch , a natural stone arch southeast of the mountain. There are rock glaciers at higher altitudes .
