Cibola County is a county in the northwest of the US state of New Mexico in the United States . It has 27,213 inhabitants. The county seat is Grants .

The county covers an area of ​​11,763 square kilometers; 6 square kilometers (0.06 percent) of this is water. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: McKinley County , Sandoval County , Bernalillo County , Valencia County , Socorro County , Catron County, and Apache County, Arizona.

history

Cibola County was formed on June 19, 1981 from parts of Valencia County and is the youngest county in New Mexico.

There is a national monument in the county , the El Morro National Monument . Three places have National Historic Landmark status , the San Estevan Del Rey Mission Church , the Hawiku Ruins and the Acoma Pueblo . Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

The county had a population of 25,595 as of the 2000 census . There were 8,327 households and 6,278 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 39.61% White, 0.96% African American, 40.32% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 15.44% other races Groups; 3.24% were from two or more races.
