history

The builder was Joe Massaglia , who received the contract from RE “Griff” Griffith , brother of the legendary Hollywood director David Wark Griffith . When RE Griffith came to Gallup in the early 1930s he was fascinated by the area. A few years later he decided to return to Gallup with the intention of building a hotel. From the beginning, El Rancho has been the center of the Gallup film industry. Both RE Griff and his brother encouraged people in the film industry to use the El Rancho Hotel as a base for the stars and their crews because of its proximity to remarkable landscapes.

After it opened in 1936, everyone was talking about the hotel, especially because of the sophisticated and comfortable furnishings and services provided by the hotel staff. The hotel staff was trained by the then very famous Fred Harvey Company .

The temporary end of the successful company "El Rancho" was initiated in the mid-1960s, when the more and more decreasing productions of western films reduced themselves to Gallup and its unique landscapes.

The importance of the hotel goes back to numerous famous film actors who stayed here between the 1930s and 1950s, mostly in the interplay of film shoots, mainly western films, that took place in the area around Gallup. Some rooms are named after the name of the star who stayed in the room. These include:
