The Estadio Tres de Marzo ( German  Stadium March 3rd ) is a football stadium on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (Autonomous University of Guadalajara) , which is located in the suburb of Zapopan to the west of Guadalajara . The name was chosen because the university was founded on March 3, 1935. The stadium is the home ground of the Mexican first division club Estudiantes Tecos , but is also used for open-air concerts.

history

After the bodies of the largest private university in the greater Guadalajara area had decided to set up a professional football team, which was given a starting place in the then third-class Tercera División in 1971 , a suitable sports park had to be built at the same time. At the time it held around 3,000 spectators and was designed for the third division.

But the team was promoted to the Segunda División , which was still second-rate at the time and for which stricter criteria applied, after just two years . For example, the stadiums of the clubs playing in this league had to be able to accommodate at least 15,000 visitors. The stadium was expanded accordingly. But the footballers rose again in 1975. This time in the Primera División , the top division. Another expansion was necessary and the capacity increased to 22,000.

About a decade later, the stadium was the venue for the in Mexico discharged 1986 FIFA World Cup chosen, leading to a further expansion in addition to modernization by themselves. The official capacity during the 1986 World Cup was exactly 30,015. Two games of group D were played here, in which record world champions Brazil were also represented. Its games were all played in the much larger Estadio Jalisco . The Estadio Tres de Marzo played two group matches for the Northern Ireland team: on June 3rd against Algeria (1-1) and on June 7th against Spain (1-2).

The most recent modernization took place in 1999. The capacity of the stadium, which was rarely sold out, was reduced to 22,000.
