The Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara (UAG) is the oldest private university in Mexico . It was founded in 1935 to protest against socialist education in public universities. Despite the name being used differently, the university is not located in the district of Guadalajara, but in its neighboring village to the west, Zapopan. In particular, the fact that medical studies at the UAG are also recognized in the USA has led to an increasing number of students from abroad.

It was founded in 1935 by students who protested against socialist education at the public universities under Lázaro Cárdenas del Río . On March 3, 2005, the university celebrated its 70th birthday. The university is still privately owned by the Leaño family, who also have the current rector, Antonio Leaño Reyes .
