Colin John Clarke (born October 30, 1962 in Newry ) is a former Northern Irish soccer player and current coach of North Carolina FC in the United Soccer League .
Club career
At the age of 18, the Northern Irishman started his career at Ipswich Town , where he did not appear on the professional team. A year later he played for Peterborough United . In three years he played 82 games and scored 18 goals. Other clubs, where he played, were Gillingham FC , Tranmere Rovers , AFC Bournemouth , Portsmouth , Southampton FC and Queens Park Rangers . The striker had his most successful time at Southampton, where he scored 36 goals in 82 games. In total, Clarke played 361 games and scored 146 goals during his thirteen-year career, which he had to end due to a knee injury at the end of the 1992/1993 season.
National team
For the national team of Northern Ireland he was on the field 38 times from 1986 to 1992 and scored 13 goals. In 1986 he was in Northern Ireland's squad at the World Cup in Mexico . Clarke held the Northern Irish national team's top scorer record until David Healy overtook him.
Coaching career
He has been a trainer in the USA since 1998. His first stop was the Richmond Kickers . In 2000 he briefly took over the office at San Diego Flash , before they broke up in 2001. Since 2003 he coached the team of FC Dallas in the MLS . In 2007 he took over the coaching position with the Virginia Beach Mariners before the new season .
After the Mariners withdrew from the current game, Clarke took over the coaching position at Puerto Rico Islanders FC and has also been the national coach of Puerto Rico since January 2008.
