from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yannick Stopyra (born January 9, 1961 in Troyes / Aube ) is a former French football player .

Club career

Stopyra comes from a family that gave him little choice but to become a footballer himself: his great-grandmother was one of the founding members of FC Lorient , his uncle Antoine Cuissard was a 27-time national player in the 1940 / 50s, his cousin Yvon Goujon came eleven times in the 1960s and his father Julien (1960, but only once) in the Équipe Tricolore. In Redon ( Département Ille-et-Vilaine , Brittany ) Yannick Stopyra made his first footballing attempts; his talent was recognized early and Yannick was accepted into the football school of FC Sochaux , where he also signed a professional contract in 1979. In his first season in the highest French league, he was part of the Sochaliens team and played 34 games in Division 1 ; At the end of this season, the young center forward was French runner-up and had contributed 14 goals himself. In addition, in February 1980, when he had just turned 19, he received his first appointment to the French national football team . Over the next three years, Stopyra scored 38 goals in another 109 games for Sochaux. In 1983 he moved back to his native Brittany; however, he could not prevent the relegation of Stade Rennes .

As successful as in Sochaux, he was again between 1984 and 1988 at Toulouse FC , then had a good year at Girondins Bordeaux , but was only used in one league game in his second season there (1989/90). Therefore he moved to AS Cannes in the middle of the season (until 1991). He then ended his active career at FC Metz and the lower-class FC Mulhouse . Overall, he has played 422 games and scored 124 goals in the top French league, but was neither champion nor cup winner with his clubs .

The national player

Between February 1980 and April 1988, Yannick Stopyra played a total of 33 times in the Equipe Tricolore and scored eleven goals for them. However, his successful debut (as a substitute in the second half and already his first international goal 20 minutes later) was followed by a longer period in which national coach Michel Hidalgo hardly considered him: a second brief assignment in September 1981, an even shorter third in May 1982 - and the World Cup in Spain took place without a stopyra. Although he played and scored more often afterwards, he was also ignored when France won the European Championship (1984) . Only then, under Hidalgo's successor Henri Michel , did Yannick Stopyra become a regular at the Bleus ; At the 1986 World Cup he was on the pitch in six of the seven games and also scored two goals, and also scored in the quarter-finals on penalties against Brazil . Third place in this tournament was Stopyra's greatest success on an international level.

Life after the active time

Today Yannick Stopyra passes on his experiences to young people: he is director of the Center de Formation of the French football association FFF for the north-east of the country in Madine / Meuse . In November 2006, the Qatar Club hired him as head coach.
