In the 1959/60 season, Újpest took first place in the Nemzeti Bajnokság with five points ahead of Ferencváros Budapest . In the following two years, Újpest was second, 1960/61 with four points behind Vasas Budapest , 1961/62 with two points again behind Vasas. On the international level, Pál Várhidi could not win any titles with Újpest, but they reached the semi-finals in the 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cup , although they had not won the cup last year, but only made it to the final. There they failed at the defending champions Fiorentina with 2-0 in Italy and 1-0 in Budapest. Florence then lost the final to Atlético Madrid . Pál Várhidi could not create another such respectable success with Újpest, he ended his active career with the club in 1965 after sixteen years.

After the end of his active career as a football player, Pál Várhidi became a football coach. He coached various clubs, including his hometown club Újpest Budapest from 1974 to 1980. After he had previously coached the club as an assistant coach, he took over the office of coach in 1974 and had a very successful time with Újpest. In his first season as head coach, he won the Hungarian championship when they finished first in the table with three points ahead of Ferencváros Budapest. In the same year he also participated very successfully with the club in the European Cup, where Újpest advanced to the semi-finals, where they failed at the eventual winner Bayern Munich . Previously one had defeated Benfica Lisbon , among others . The following seasons were also very successful for Várhidi and Újpest, until the end of his time as a coach at the club he won the Hungarian football championship three more times, and two more times they finished second. Várhidi also won the Hungarian Cup , which he never won as a player, with Újpest in 1975. During his time as coach of Újpest Budapest, he also coached his son Péter , who played for Újpest from 1968 to 1980, and later also became a coach coached the Hungarian national football team from 2006 to 2008.

In the Hungarian national football team , Pál Várhidi made ten appearances as a player between 1954 and 1957. The defender was in Hungary's squad for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland , but did not play a single game, while his team, which started the tournament as the big favorite, only lost to Germany in the final in the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern and won the title they believed to be missed. Pál Várhidi experienced a second major tournament with the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , where the Hungarian team won the bronze medal. Here, too, he was only in the squad and was not used. After the death of Jenő Buzánszky on January 11, 2015, he was next to József Tóth the last player still alive who was in the Hungarian squad at the 1954 World Cup.
