László Budai [ ˈlaːsloː 'budɒ.i ] (born July 19, 1928 in Budapest ; † July 2, 1983 there ) was a Hungarian football player .

Career

Budai was a member of the " Golden Elf " ( Hungarian Aranycsapat ), the Hungarian national team, also known as "Magical Magyars", which won gold at the 1952 Summer Olympics and the German selection at the 1954 World Cup in Bern at the Wunder von Bern was subject.

The striker Budai, who was under contract with Budapest Honvéd FC from 1953 to 1958 , played as a Hungarian international in two games in the 1954 World Cup: in his team's 9-0 victory over South Korea on June 17, 1954 and in a 4-2 - Hungary's semi-final victory over Uruguay on June 30, 1954. In the final against Germany, however, Mihály Tóth played in his place as left winger next to Puskás . In the World Cup 1958 in Sweden it was only used once: When 4: 0 victory of his team against Mexico on June 15, 1958. This World Cup was disappointing, as the Hungarians after the first round had to go home. The golden age of the golden elf was over. He recorded a total of 39 appearances in the national jersey and scored ten goals.

After his career as a player, he worked from 1962 to 1967 at ETI SC as a coach, from 1967 to 1980 he coached Kossuth KFSE.

The two medals that László Budai won in 1952 (Olympic gold in Helsinki) and 1954 (World Cup silver in Bern) were auctioned off at the Swiss auction house Peter Rapp in Wil for CHF 10,800 each from his estate .
