Imre Kovács (born November 26, 1921 in Budapest ; † March 9, 1996 there ) was a Hungarian football player . He took part in the 1954 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

Career

Imre Kovács began his career with the Tatabányai Bányász Sport Club in the city of the same name. Before that, he was already active in several regional youth clubs. After only a short time in Tatabánya, Kovács moved to Diósgyőri Vasgyárak Testgyakorló Köre before joining MTK Budapest FC , then known as MTK Hungária FC , in 1945 . In a team with Nándor Hidegkuti , Mihály Lantos or József Zakariás , among others , Kovács won the Hungarian football championship three times during his time at MTK. In the 1951 season they were first with four points ahead of Kispest-Honvéd Budapest , the Hungarian army club, which at that time played the best players in the country, such as Ferenc Puskás or Sándor Kocsis . Two years later, after 26 games, they were three points ahead of Kispest-Honvéd and won the championship again. Imre Kovács won his last championship with MTK Hungária in the 1957/58 season, when they took first place in the Nemzeti Bajnokság with one point ahead of Kispest-Honvéd. Kovács also won the Magyar Kupa , the Hungarian football cup, with MTK once during his time, winning the title in 1952 with a 3-2 win in the final against Dorogi Bányász . Imre Kovács played at MTK Hungária until 1959, before he ended his active career and became a football coach. After he had trained MTK as a player-coach since 1956, he worked as a coach at the club until 1964, but did not win any title apart from the Mitropa Cup in 1962. The greatest success of his coaching activity at MTK is reaching the final in the 1963/64 European Cup Winners' Cup , where MTK lost 3: 3 after extra time and 0: 1 to Sporting Lisbon , after having previously defeated Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Celtic Glasgow would have. Kovács acted as trainer together with Béla Volentik in this international success . After the end of his time as a coach at MTK, he coached many smaller clubs, but also for a short time Újpest Budapest , Videoton FC and again MTK Budapest.

In the Hungarian national football team Imre Kovács was used a total of eight times between 1948 and 1952. With the national team of his home country he took part in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland . In the tournament in which he was not used, the Hungarian team, which had gone into the World Cup as the big favorite, reached the final, but surprisingly lost 3-2 to Germany . He also took part with Hungary in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki , where he made his last international match in the first round match against Romania in Turku (2-1). His team, however, won the tournament after defeating Yugoslavia 2-0 in the final.
