Georges Stuber (1954)

Georges Stuber (born May 11, 1925 - April 16, 2006 ) was a Swiss football player .

Athletic career

Stuber began his adult career at FC Luzern . In 1948 the goalkeeper moved to FC Lausanne-Sport , where he became a national player and made his debut in October 1949 in the Swiss national football team ("Nati"). After he had won the Swiss Cup with the club in a replay against Cantonal Neuchâtel in 1950 , he was part of the national team at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil in the summer of that year . There he played the first two group games, after the 3-0 opening defeat against Yugoslavia , the game against hosts Brazil was one of his great moments. Thanks to his saves, the Nati reached a 2-2 draw. After the elimination was confirmed early enough, Adolphe Hug was allowed to guard the Swiss goal in the final group game against Mexico .

In the 1950/51 season that followed the World Cup , Stuber was part of the Lausanne team that won the sixth championship title in the club's history. In the following years he could not build on the success with the club, but remained in the circle of the national team. Thus, he was also part of national coach Karl Rappan's squad at the 1954 home World Cup . Surprisingly, however, Eugène Parlier left the place between the posts when the tournament for the Swiss began at Lausanne's Stade Olympique de la Pontaise and later ended in the quarter-finals against Austria in the heated battle of Lausanne . In May 1955 Stuber played the last of his 14 international matches , at the same time he reached the club level in the post-World Cup 1954/55 season behind FC La Chaux-de-Fonds .

In 1957 Stuber moved to Servette FC Genève . Here he was once again in the final of the Swiss Cup in 1959, but FC Grenchen won it 1-0. He was then succeeded by René Schneider as Geneva goalkeeper and ended his career.
