society
Von Bergen was in the youth team of FC Hauterive before moving to Neuchâtel Xamax in 2000 . In the summer of 2005, the then coach of FC Zurich , Lucien Favre , brought him to Zurich. In his first season with FCZ, von Bergen played 36 games and thus contributed to the first title win since 1981. The championship was defended in the following season. When Favre moved to Hertha BSC in Berlin in the summer of 2007, he took the central defender with him. Von Bergen made his debut in Germany's top division against Arminia Bielefeld on matchday two . In the first year he finished 10th in the Bundesliga with the capital city. The team qualified for the UEFA Cup via fair play . After relegation in the 2009/10 season, he left Berlin and was initially without a club for a month before signing a two-year contract with the Italian club AC Cesena on August 4th .
For the 2012/13 season , Bergen initially moved to CFC Genoa , but was transferred to US Palermo in August 2012 . A year later, von Bergen announced that he had signed a five-year contract with the Bernese Young Boys .
In April 2019, von Bergen announced that he would end his active career after the current season.
National team
Von Bergen made his national team debut on September 6, 2006 in a 2-0 win over Costa Rica . From then on, he was a permanent member of the Swiss team and was nominated in the preliminary squad for the 2008 European Championship in Switzerland and Austria . In preparation for this tournament, however, he injured himself (he broke his hand) and had to cancel his participation. After the European Championship, von Bergen returned to appearances for the national team (nine in all) and was finally appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup . After regular player Philippe Senderos injured himself in the opening game against Spain in the 23rd minute, Steve von Bergen was used for the first time in his national team career in a major tournament and finally celebrated a historic victory with Switzerland (1-0). After no victory in the following two games against Chile and Honduras , Switzerland was eliminated from the tournament early. At the 2014 World Cup he was replaced by a badly injured foot in the game against France. He suffered a facial fracture and could no longer play the tournament.
