Ludovic Magnin [ ˈlydɔvik ˈmaɲɛ̃ ] (born April 20, 1979 in Lausanne ) is a Swiss football coach and former football player . He took part with the Swiss national football team in the European championships in 2004 and 2008 as well as in the world championships in 2006 and 2010 and was German champion with Werder Bremen in 2004 and with VfB Stuttgart in 2007.

Player career

Magnin played on the left, where he was used both in defense as a left defender of a back four and in midfield.

society

From 1987 to 1996 he played in Echallens . After a short detour to the juniors of Lausanne-Sports , he moved to Yverdon-Sport in the summer of 1997 in the second highest division in Switzerland, today's Challenge League . In Yverdon he became a regular player and played 61 games in two seasons. After the 1998/99 season Yverdon rose to the top division, today's Axpo Super League . There, too, Magnin was an undisputed regular player, played in 35 of 36 games and scored two goals.

Due to his strong performance, he aroused the interest of the ambitious AC Lugano . With Lugano he played one and a half seasons in the top division, where he completed 46 games and scored one goal. In the winter of 2001/02 he moved to the German Bundesliga for Werder Bremen for a transfer fee of around 1 million Swiss francs . In the first three seasons, however, he was only used 20 times and scored one goal. Especially in his third season ( 2003/04 ) he was haunted by bad luck with injuries. While his team was German champions and cup winners , Magnin broke his cheekbone , had several torn muscle fibers and other injuries. On the 2005/2006 season Magnin moved to VfB Stuttgart . With VfB he was again German champion in 2007 as a regular player . On February 4, 2008, Magnin signed a new contract with VfB, which was dated until the end of June 2010.

In January 2010, half a year before his contract in Stuttgart expired, Magnin moved to FC Zurich where he signed a 3½ year contract with a mutual extension option. On August 27, 2012, Ludovic Magnin ended his active career due to physical complaints and announced that he would take on a role as assistant coach in the youth division of FC Zurich.

National team

Magnin made his debut in the squad of the Swiss national football team in August 2000. In summer 2004, Magnin was allowed to drive to Portugal with the Swiss national team for the 2004 European championships, despite a lack of fitness , but only got a short part-time assignment. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany, he was a regular in the Swiss squad as well as at the 2008 European Championship , although he tore a ligament and capsule in his left ankle a good eleven weeks before the start of the tournament.

For the 2010 World Cup , Magnin was nominated for the injured Christoph Spycher , but was not used. After the 2010 World Cup, Magnin ended his national team career.

Coaching career

Magnin won the Swiss U-18 championship as a youth coach with FC Zurich in 2016. In the summer of the same year he was also a short-term assistant coach of the first team at FCZ and supported the team in this role in winning the final of the Swiss Cup 2015/16 . In the summer of 2017, he became the coach of the club's U-21 team.

On February 20, 2018, Magnin took over the position of head coach for the professionals at FC Zurich. He celebrated his greatest personal success as a coach at the end of May 2018 with the tenth cup win for FC Zurich , which was his first trophy as a coach.

Others

Magnin's strengths as a footballer were his dynamism, with which he was able to launch attacks from the left, as well as his combative attitude. On the other hand, he was not one of the most technically skilled players and had certain weaknesses on the defensive by neglecting some of his defensive tasks in his advances.

Magnin, who is a trained primary school teacher, has three children.
