career
societies
Geiger started his football career as a defender at FC Sion (July 1978-June 1981). The technically talented Valais won the 1980 Cup final with 2-1 goals against BSC Young Boys on May 26, 1980 with the team from the canton capital . With Servette Geneva (from 1981/82) Geiger experienced the three-time runner-up in the years 1982 to 1984; the lost 1983 Cup final (in the replay) against Grasshoppers; the playoff for the 1984 championship, lost with 0: 1 goals, and the cup win on June 11, 1984 with 1: 0 n.V. against Lausanne, where he scored the decisive goal in the 95th minute of the game before winning the first time the championship in Switzerland after the round 1984/85 could celebrate. After the 1986 Cup final - 3-1 defeat against Sion - he moved to Lake Neuchâtel to Xamax Neuchatel. With coach Gilbert Gress , the man from Sion won the title twice in his two years at Xamax in 1987 and 1988. Then the 27-year-old moved to France for two rounds at AS Saint-Etienne. As a homecomer - he played again for Sion from 1990/91 - he had great success straight away: behind the team from the Hardturm (Stadium) (GC) the veteran came out of the championship round as runner-up and won the cup final on May 20, 1991 with 3-2 goals against Young Boys Bern. The crowning glory was the championship win in the following round in 1991/92 before Xamax and GC. Geiger celebrated his fourth cup success on June 5, 1995 with a 4-2 win over GC. He ended his playing career in 1997 after 494 games in the NLA.
National team
On November 19, 1980, the 20-year-old violinist made his debut in the Swiss national soccer team . Coach Leon Walker called him for the World Cup qualifier against England. In London the "Nati" lost with 1: 2 goals and Walker lost his post on December 21, 1980. The highlight for the captain of the national team was to be the successful qualification for the football World Cup 1994 in the USA and the tournament itself under coach Roy Hodgson . Libero Geiger played all three preliminary round matches against the USA, Romania and Colombia and was eliminated from the tournament with his team- mates Stéphane Chapuisat , Adrian Knup , Ciriaco Sforza and Alain Sutter on July 2, 1994 in Washington in the second round after a 3-0 defeat against Spain out. Geiger played his last game in the national team at the 1996 European Football Championship in England. On June 8, he completed his 112th international match in a 1-1 draw with England, ending his international career. Coach Artur Jorge replaced him in central defense with Stéphane Henchoz and Ramon Vega .
