Uvrier is a Swiss town and a district and suburb of the city of Sion in the canton of Valais .

geography

The periurban village is located far outside the city on the eastern edge of the urban area. It is four kilometers away from the next quarters of the Sion agglomeration and is located on the city limits, which runs through the canalised stream bed of the Lienne torrent near Uvrier . On the other side of the Lienne is the municipality of Saint-Léonard in the district of Sierre , which together with Uvrier forms a closed settlement area.

Until the 19th century, Uvrier was a small hamlet next to the Lienne bridge on the road from Sion to Sierre with only a few buildings. Next to it was a large agricultural area, on the gently sloping alluvial fan of the Lienne primarily for orchards and on the steep mountainside above the town of viticulture is used. It was only in the course of the 20th century that a new village emerged from this, consisting of a loose housing estate with a few businesses. A significant part of the agricultural area in the valley floor had to give way to the rapidly growing settlement.

In 2012, Uvier had a population of around 1,400 people. Most of the working people work as commuters . In the vicinity of the chapel, which was built in 1968, and thanks to the work of a district council ( Conseil de communauté ), a social life has developed in the village. The church belongs to the parish of St-Léonard-Uvrier.

The Uvrier vineyard is the easternmost section of the Vignoble de Sion wine-growing region , which was laid out on numerous dry stone walls because of its steep location . Bigger businesses in the village are the 4-star Hôtel des Vignes , built in 1991 and owned by the bourgeoisie de Sion, the Uvrier shopping center by Coop and the RDC Mécanique générale car garage .

There are various public infrastructures at Uvrier. The cantonal road, the Simplon railway line and the A 9 motorway run through the area. The motorway crosses under the canalised stream of the Lienne in a short tunnel and crosses the Rhone on the bridge Pont sur le Rhône à Uvrier . In the south of the village is the waste incineration plant of the central Valais Unité d'Incinération d'Ordures Ménagères Uvrier . There is a motocross course to the west of the village .
