Mario Frick (born September 7, 1974 in Chur , Switzerland ) is a former Liechtenstein soccer player and current coach . He was the team captain of the Liechtenstein national team for many years .

Career in the club

He started his career at his home club FC Balzers . At the age of 16 he made his debut in the 1st team. After scoring 36 goals in 20 games in one season, he was watched by various Swiss clubs (including FC Zurich, Grasshoppers Zurich, FC St. Gallen) and moved to FC St. Gallen in the top division of Switzerland. After two seasons as a regular with the Eastern Switzerland team , he moved to FC Basel for three years , where he became a fan favorite and scored 30 goals. His move to rival FC Zurich caused quite a stir. In the first season he was able to celebrate the cup victory with the FCZ and give the city of Zurich their first title in over 20 years. After nine games in the second season, he fell out with coach Gilbert Gress and moved to the Italian Serie C, to AC Arezzo, as all other transfer windows were already closed. He scored 16 goals in 23 games and just 9 months after moving to Italy he made his Serie A debut with Hellas Verona . The first game ended 1-1 against champions AS Roma .

He played over a hundred Serie A games . With almost 600 professional games and over 140 goals, he is the most successful Liechtenstein player to date. In the summer break of 2011 he returned to FC Balzers . There he also took over the role of player- coach on an interim basis in September 2012 .

Career in the national team

On October 26, 1993, he played his first game in the Liechtenstein national team and on May 30, 2008, he became the record player for his country. With 16 goals he is also a record scorer. On August 10, 2011, he wore jersey number 100 in the friendly against Switzerland , as this was his 100th game for Liechtenstein. On October 12, 2015, he officially ended his career as a national player during the qualifying game for the 2016 European Football Championship against Austria in Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium .
